Driver Rehabilitation
Driving is very important in today’s society. Being able to drive following an injury or illness helps many to regain independence and actively participate in the community or work again.
As a result of any change in your physical or mental ability, your driver’s license may be suspended. In Alberta, you are required to report changes in your ability to drive to Alberta Transportation.
Talk to your doctor first about whether it is appropriate for you to consider driving again. To have your license renewed, you will have to complete a few steps.
A driver rehabilitation service will help you to learn more about your specific abilities to drive and other options. They may suggest modifications to your vehicle, or adapted equipment like hand controls and spinner knobs.
On-road training may be available to help you practice driving with adaptations or to regain your confidence. This may improve your chance of being able to drive and getting a driver’s license.
Check services available in your community by contacting: HEALTHLink Alberta at 1-866-408-5465.
Vehicle insurance
It is recommended that you contact your insurance company regarding any changes to your driver’s license and your vehicle (i.e. modifications or adapted equipment).
Additional information
In the past, major car companies have offered rebates to purchase adaptive equipment such as hand controls or lifts. For information, contact your local dealership or the particular program directly:

Vehicle selection
Certain vehicles are better suited for transfers, wheelchair storage or driving with hand controls. Depending on your level of injury, you will need to consider what vehicle is appropriate for your needs as either a passenger or a driver. Consult your occupational therapist or a driver rehabilitation service to help you decide the best vehicle for your needs.
Disabled parking
To use a designated disabled parking area, you must have a Parking Placard for Persons with Disabilities on your rear view mirror or your dashboard. To apply for a placard, an application form must be completed by your physician, occupational therapist or physical therapist and submitted to a registry agent. Ask your therapist or social worker for a form or apply directly at any registry office.
