Driver evaluation & Training Services (Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital)

Overview

The Driver Evaluation and Training Service at Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital provides assessment, counseling and training for individuals with a wide variety of disabilities or health conditions that may affect driving.

Our service assists clients to learn new driving techniques or choose adaptations for their vehicle that will enable safe driving. We provide on-road training in an adapted car or custom-modified, fully adapted, wheelchair accessible van for individuals to practice driving skills. Classroom theory can be arranged through a number of selected driving schools.

Outreach services are also available on a contract basis for in-vehicle assessment or training by a driver instructor with an adapted vehicle.

The Alberta Government recognizes this service as a licensed driver training school. A Licensed Driver Instructor and Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist and/or occupational therapist deliver this service.

How do I know if I am eligible for this service?

You are eligible if you are a new or experienced driver who cannot drive or are unsure of your ability to drive due to a disability or health condition.

A valid driver’s license or learner’s permit is required, or a special permit can be arranged.

How do I set up an appointment?

Referrals must be made by a medical doctor. Call 780-735-7938, ext. 2336 or 780-735-7999, ext. 2336 to receive a referral package. Once a completed referral is received, you will be contacted to book an appointment time.

How do the evaluations work?

Assessments look at:
  • ability to move and reaction time
  • vision and perception
  • judgment and general road knowledge
  • on-the-road driving ability
Following the assessment, recommendations are discussed. If driving lessons are needed, we can help arrange that. Sometimes, for the safety of yourself and others, we recommend that you discontinue driving. Written results of your assessment will be sent to your doctor and the provincial licensing body.

Charges
Fees are charged for this service for both assessment and training/lessons. Please contact us for specific rates.
