Urodynamics and Renal Ultrasound
What is a urodynamics study?
It is a procedure that determines how your bladder is functioning. The test takes approximately 1.5 hours and the results will be reviewed by a urologist. The test will show:
- If your bladder pressures are normal or too high
- How your bladder empties
- The volume of urine your bladder will hold
Why do I need a urodynamics test?
It is used to help the urologist decide on the best management for your bladder to prevent kidney damage.
How is urodynamics done?
- Two small catheters are inserted in your bladder. One is for filling the bladder with sterile saline water. The other measures the pressures inside your bladder.
- Another small catheter is placed in the rectum to measure abdominal pressure.
- The combined recordings of these catheters give a bladder pressure measurement.
What is a renal ultrasound?
It is a test in which high-pitched sound waves (that are too high to hear) are bounced off the kidneys using a probe.
Why do I need an ultrasound?
It is used to help the urologist determine if there is blockage or swelling, or if there are cysts or stones in your kidneys.
How is an ultrasound done?
- Lubrication is applied to the probe.
- The ultrasound probe is gently moved over the skin covering the kidneys.
- Two pictures are taken of each kidney.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
- Ensure your bowel is empty prior to the appointment.
- Bring a list of medications you are now taking.
- Bring any urinary supplies that you will need for replacement following the test (condom, skin prep, pads, etc.)
