Choosing a Fitness Centre that is Right for You
Keeping fit is part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and it is important to stay active year round. If you’ve ever considered joining a fitness centre but do not know what to look for, here are some tips to help you choose a one that’s right for you.
Tour the Facility
Schedule an appointment to tour the facility during the hours you plan to use it. Find out if the staff has experience working with people with disabilities.
If you will be driving, is accessible parking available and close to the front door? Is it on an accessible bus/subway route? Is there a convenient drop off spot for WheelTrans?
Wheel around – is there enough space to use the equipment? Do the fitness station seats move to the side? Does the facility have an accessible indoor running track for distance wheeling? Is there a ramp into the pool? Are there pool chairs available? Is there a lift into the pool or will staff assist you? Are swim assessments offered to determine safety and demonstrate how to use the equipment?
Visit the change rooms. Is there a padded bench for transfers? Are the lockers and washrooms accessible? Are attendants available to assist if necessary?
Trial Membership
During the trial membership, visit the facility for a couple of days to see how you like it. Is it convenient for you? Will you actually go?
Membership Contracts
Compare a month-to month term with an annual term. Are there discounts with a yearly membership? If signing a contract, read all the fine print. Do you need to fill-out a “physician consent form” to be eligible for membership? Think about the cost as well. Is it covered by your health benefits, WSIB or MVA insurance? Are there discounted rates or subsidies you can access?
Keep in mind fitness centres aren’t your only option. Recreation programs at community centres and sports leagues can also be great ways to reach your fitness goals.
